Since the beginning of civilised mankind, most people have been too concerned with what other people think of them. The ones that haven’t are the ones that have become the most successful. “Playing it safe” and sticking to social norms and what is expected of us usually leads to a lack of progress or achievement.
What are the usual expectations parents have for their kids? Go to school, graduate and then get a job, pay a mortgage, get married then have a family. As Robert Kiyosaki would call it, this is also known as being in the “Rat Race”; doing what society expects of us, not upsetting anyone or ever really doing what we love.
The serious achievers and truly fulfilled people are the ones who “break the mould”, by doing what they love. Success and fulfilment comes from within. We create our own luck, destiny and financial situation. And sorry to break the news that success rarely has anything to do with education, a mindset not taught by any school or traditional educational institution.
The reason that most people hate public speaking is because of the ostracism that they feel when they are up on that stage, alone, no longer just “one of the crowd”. Standing out from the crowd may create controversy, but standing up for what we believe and living the life that we want to live will never favour everyone. Jay Greene puts it very well: “If it matters, it produces controversy.”
As long as you are not hurting or intentionally offending anyone by what you do, be proud of it! I believe that there are only two instances when it really matters what people think of you, when making a public speech and when selling something to someone. Life is about remaining true to yourself, and not always following the crowd, you should create the wave rather than just surf it with everyone else; just be prepared for the few who get splashed!
If you’re currently doing something that you don’t really enjoy, start to work in your spare time on your passion, until it can become your full time income and business. If you haven’t got spare time, make it. In the timeless words of Jim Rohn, “Work full-time on your income and part-time on your fortune.” It won’t be an easy path, and nothing will happen overnight; but in order to succeed you must always look at the bigger picture. As Gary Vaynerchuk says, “Life’s way too short to spend it in a job you don’t love.” Don’t be afraid of what others think, if the desire is strong enough, you will achieve it.
